Evaluating the Risks of the Evolving Power Market in Nigeria

The evolving power market in Nigeria

– State Electricity Markets

– National Electricity Market

– Unbundling of TCN

- Successor DisCos

– Subsidiary DisCos

The greatest risk is if the system does not allow capable hands to drive the complex system that is evolving.
This is why I recommended a Power System Architect (Presidential Task Force on Power, Steering Committee, etc) to be on top of the complexity we are about to witness – some with State Electricity Market, others in the National Electricity Market, NBET novation, debts being owed by a DisCo that has created a subsidiary in the State Electricity Market, Asset valuation to determine the ownership of FG, States, LG in successor DisCos, etc.

COMPOSITION OF A POWER SYSTEM ARCHITECT_AN INEXHAUSTIVE LIST

“The recommended steering group or power system architect to address the mechanisms for whole-system integration should be made up of a panel of technical experts from among the Chartered Institute of Power Engineers of Nigeria (CIPEN), the Transmission and Distribution Network companies, consultants, academia, NERC, BPE, NBET, IPPs, Nigerian Gas Company, NNPC, NEMSA, MAN, data and ICT companies, the Nigerian Electricity Consumers’ forum, SON, Lawyers, Accountants, economists, environmental specialists, and so on, who have practical experience of electricity supply business.”
